30 months ago I started riding again after a ten year layoff. I "hung up the bike" in 1997 after ten years of competition and hard training when life started to get in the way--kids, job, etc. But the love of the bike was always there, and now I found myself with 10 extra hours per week I could go out and ride. When I started back, I jumped right back on my '90's steel frame DeRosa, and within weeks noticed that age and changes in my body left me feeling like I was fighting my bike in the areas of comfort, power, overall enjoyment.
Then I made two momentous decisions. The first was to renew my friendship with cyclist extraordinaire Kevin Bucy of KSG Bikes in Dallas. He got me on a DeRosa carbon frame--an exponential increase in overall riding comfort and bike performance. The second was to take Kevin B's recommendation to be completely "refit" on my frame, by his KSG Bikes San Antonio compatriot Kevin Saunders. Kevin S. spent hours with me, on his custom built bicycle fitting system, and he found a multiple number of problems with my current bike setup--stem too long, bars too low, seat too far forward, cranks too short, shoe/pedal position wrong; weak pedal stroke. By making adjustments in ALL of these areas, I have seen a remarkable increase in comfort--no more neck or back problems, better breathing, less leg fatigue. Better yet has been the increase in overall power--I'm riding at 2-3 MPH more than before, able to drive up the climbs and recover faster at the top, and jump and sprint to a higher speed than ever before, even during my racing days. Best of all, I get more out of a 90 minute workout now than I ever imagined possible.
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. KSG bikes proved to me that even at age 57 they could!!
