Colnago Track SRM

Kevin Saunders has always maintained that good cycling skills are important whether racing or just riding a bike. One way to improve the learning curve is with a fixed gear bike. The fixed gear forces one to spin all the time and to forego coasting. This track bike has been modified to permit road riding: a road fork drilled for a brake, pluls a front brake has been installed. Also, a seatpost mounted water bottle apparatus is used to allow the rider to carry two bottles in the hot South Texas hill country.

For road riding in the hills, a 50-19 gear ratio is chosen, which is barely workable uphill, and with a maximum spin of 200 rpm's downhill, quite useable. Kevin is a former track racer so these skills are natural, but anyone can learn to ride a "fixie" on the road and get tremendous benefit.

Another notable installation on this bike is the SRM track system, which is based on the Professional version. This gallery shows the way we install an SRM on a track bike, and a good example of  a road fixed gear setup. We will create a column article on fixed gear riding, but this gallery should be a nice start to introducing one to a new way to approach the bike.
